A parent’s perspective on food, supplements, and growing bodies
We live in a paradoxical time.
Our children are eating more than any generation before them — more calories, more snacks, more “kids’ food” options — and yet parents are more worried than ever about nutrition. Concerns around immunity, digestion, bone development, focus, and energy have become almost universal.
To bridge this gap, many of us turn to supplements:
multivitamin gummies, vitamin D drops, iron syrups, omega oils, probiotic powders.
This raises an uncomfortable but important question:
If our children are eating enough, why do we feel the need to supplement so much?
When Food Stopped Doing the Job Alone
Over the last 100–120 years, food systems have changed dramatically.
Industrialization brought scale, convenience, and longer shelf life — but often at the cost of nutrient density. Milling removed natural fats and minerals from grains. Industrial farming optimized yield rather than soil health. Processing prioritized taste, texture, and speed over nourishment.
As a result, something subtle but significant happened:

Nutrients that were once naturally present in food were reduced or lost

Those same nutrients began to be added back later — as isolated supplements
This is not a conspiracy or a failure of intention. It is the outcome of a system designed for efficiency, storage, and mass distribution.
But for growing children, the consequences matter.
The Rise of the Supplement Era
The modern supplement industry is relatively young. Most vitamins and fortified products entered mainstream use only in the last century.
Supplements exist for a reason. They can be helpful, and in some cases necessary. But they were originally meant to support food, not replace it.
Three realities are often overlooked in the conversation around children’s supplements:
1. Absorption Is Not Guaranteed
Many essential vitamins — such as A, D, E, and K — are fat-soluble. This means they require dietary fat to be absorbed effectively. Without the right food context, the body may not fully utilize what is consumed.
2. Nutrients Don’t Work in Isolation
In real food, nutrients come packaged with enzymes, fats, and cofactors that aid digestion and absorption. Supplements isolate nutrients into standardized doses, which may behave differently in the body.
3. Long-Term Pediatric Data Is Limited
Most children’s supplements are designed around adult nutrition models, scaled down for age. While safety is tested, long-term dependency and absorption outcomes over years of use are still an evolving area of research.
This does not mean supplements are “bad.”
It means they are compensatory, not foundational.
Breakfast: Where the Gap Often Begins
For many families, breakfast is the most rushed meal of the day.
A common modern breakfast for children looks like:

Milk with white bread, jam, or Nutella

Sweetened cereals

Instant flavored oats
These foods are convenient and calorie-dense. But nutritionally, they often lack:

Natural fats that support absorption

Slow-digesting components that sustain energy
-
Depth beyond quick carbohydrates
Most of these breakfast formats did not exist in their current form even 100 years ago.
Historically, morning meals were:

Fat-inclusive
-
Warm and slow-digesting
-
Grounded in whole ingredients
The modern breakfast fills the stomach quickly — but often leaves the body asking for more soon after.
Eating More, Nourishing Less
This creates a pattern many parents recognize:

Children eat regularly, yet feel tired

Digestion feels inconsistent
-
Focus and appetite fluctuate

Supplements become routine rather than occasional
The issue is rarely a lack of food.
It is often a lack of nutrient density and absorption support.
How Did Children Thrive Before Supplements?
This question is worth pausing on.
Our great-grandparents did not have:

Vitamin bottles
-
Fortified cereals
-
Protein powders
-
“Kids’ nutrition” aisles
What they did have was:

Whole milk, butter, and ghee

Seasonal vegetables and grains
-
Fermented foods
-
Slow cooking methods
Nutrition came embedded in daily meals, not added afterward.
Children didn’t need supplements because food itself carried the nourishment.
Can It Be Different Today?
We cannot rewind civilization.
We live in cities.
We work long hours.
We rely on modern food systems.
And yet, as parents, we are not powerless.
As a father myself, I don’t believe in extremes. I don’t believe in abandoning modern life or chasing perfection.
I believe in small, intelligent shifts:

Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods where it matters most

Understanding how absorption actually works

Using supplements thoughtfully, not automatically
This is not about guilt.
It is about awareness.
A Simple Thought Experiment
I recently looked at five of the most common supplements parents give their children between the ages of 2 and 10 — each solving a different concern:

Immunity

Digestion
-
Bone development
-
Energy
-
Overall growth
Then I asked a simple question:
What foods did earlier generations rely on to support these same needs — without supplements?
The answers were surprisingly consistent.
That exploration changed how I think about children’s nutrition, especially mornings, digestion, and the role of natural fats in growing bodies.
